Avoiding Sports Related Injuries

Mar 07, 2019
Whether a professional athlete or someone who simply enjoys playing sports for fun, it’s important to remember that injuries are not inevitable. In fact, at Multi-Care Medical, we have some great tips to help you stay safe while taking part in your favorite sports.

Work with a coach or trainer who knows what they’re doing

Medical knowledge is constantly improving and you want to work with a coach or trainer who keeps up on the latest information. They should be well versed in physical training so they can help you avoid injuries and stay safe.

If you’re a member of a gym or a sports club, ask if there’s a resident trainer or coach who can give you advice.

Be careful when using training equipment

If you’re not supporting your joints the right way, then you could end up with devastating muscle injuries that leave you benched for an entire season. To prevent this, build your core muscle strength so that your entire body is supported. You’ll also be able to move faster – without worry of hurting yourself.

Give special care to your joints

Your joints, such as your elbows, ankles, shoulders, and knees, are weak points on your body that can result in injuries if you’re not careful. If you have a weak joint, wear supports for it. Also, make sure you’re balancing your weight correctly on the balls of your feet. This prevents a sudden impact that your joints may not be able to handle.

Start every workout with a warm-up

At Multi-Care Medical, we can’t stress enough how important it is for every athlete to start any sport or exercise with a warm up. Why? Because it can prevent muscle strain and cramps – plus you’ll have better movement and more flexibility.

Learn the right techniques for jumping

Most sports require some type of jumping or lunging, which can sometimes be dangerous. Avoid extending your legs or knees at strange angles to avoid a leg or ankle injury.

Stretch as a part of your daily exercise

Stretching should be included, not as an afterthought, but as a part of your daily warm-up and exercise routine. In fact, we recommend that you do it after a workout, too.

Stay active throughout the year

One of the best tips for injury prevention is to simply stay active. Even if you’re not taking part in your regular routine, you can stay active. This will ensure that you don’t lose that muscle strength you’ve worked hard to get and that you will stay flexible.

Condition your muscles

Many sports injuries could be prevented simply by ensuring your muscles are properly conditioned. This can mean lifting weights, running, or a wide range of other options.

Multi-Care Medical

Even when taking great care to prevent, sports injuries can sometimes still occur. If you’ve suffered a sports injury, reach out to us today and let the experienced professionals at Multi-Care Medical help you get back into the game as quickly as possible!
